Two Brothers nabbed for robbery

Two brothers, Ben Justus and Fred Justus (not real names), alleged to be notorious armed robbers, and specialising in car theft were recently arrested by the Lagos State Special Anti–Robbery Squad (SARS). Luck ran against them when, with the other members of their gang, they robbed a victim at a hotel in Lagos.

One of the gang members was said to have seen the owner of the car where he parked his car and was urinating by the side, pointed a gun at him and took away the car. They sold the car for N250,000 at Amukoko, Lagos. The buyer gave N15,000 to Ben, which he shared with his brother, Fred. He was said to have given him N7,000.

The officer in charge of SARS in the state, Mr. Abba Kyari, said the two suspects were notorious for robbing people of their cars. He stated that they claimed to rent guns to carry out their nefarious activities.

Ben, 26, said they had been involved in several armed robberies and that they specialised in stealing Toyota Camry cars: “Our major operation is at the hotels where we do rob the victims and sell the cars at give away prices. It was one of our gang members, who robbed at the hotel. We collected the key of the car from the victim while he was urinating.

We took the car and went away to sell it at a cheap price of N250,000. The buyer gave us N15,000 with a promise to pay the balance later. I shared the N15,000 with my brother, Fred as I gave him N7,000. I have confessed to the police on how we normally rob.” “My parents are alive. They reside in Benin City. It was in Oshodi that we rented the guns. We do rent his gun for N20,000 and after the operation he would collect his gun back.”

The second suspect, Fred, said he was senior to Ben and that he only followed them to the operation: “I was only given my own share. I did not know that my brother usually rented guns but I used to see gun with him.”
Also, a 41-year-old man, who has been impersonating an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) within the state was arrested by SARS. He was wearing a Police T-shirt greeting a police officer when other policemen nearby became suspicious.

When questioned, he told them that he was an ASP but the policemen on patrol were not convinced. He was consequently arrested and taken to the RRS, Alausa, before he was transferred to SARS Office.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Yakubu Alkali, told our reporter that the suspect wanted to join the recruit of “spices” at the Police College, Ikeja, but he was disqualified because of his bad health. The CP said the suspect got the police kits during the last promotion of ASPs.

Kyari stated that the police went to the fake ASP’s house in Surulere and found fake NYSC certificate and other fake documents. He explained that they saw ASP rank and six pairs of police clothes, a fake University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), results and a fake PCRC identity card. The suspect told our reporter that he was a herbalist: “I am not a graduate. It is true that I am a fake ASP and I bought the rank uniform at the Police College, Ikeja. I do pray for people as a cleric.”

“I wanted to join the Nigeria Police ‘spices’ before the devil tempted me to buy an illegal uniform and a rank of ASP. I did an ID card of a police officer (ASP). I am not qualified as police ‘spices’ because of my bad health, high blood pressure. I have to survive. I love Nigeria Police and I want to join.”

The police commissioner said the suspects would soon be charged to court.
