Two men arrested for possessing human head

Two men, Moshood Babatunde,33 , Babatunde Adebayo, 38, are currently telling an Osogbo Magistrate Court how they came about a human head found in their possession. The fresh head, according to the police, was cut off from the corpse of one Jimoh Mustapha Abefe.
The corpse was allegedly exhumed from a grave at a cemetery, belonging to Al-Birr Islamic (Doing Good) Foundation, located at Kelebe, Osogbo,Osun State.

Abefe, aged 65, was said to have been buried on October 11, 2011.
The Foundation, which was established three years ago, had been at the forefront of campaign against burial of dead ones in the house.
Members believe that evils inherent in burying dead ones at home are greater than the gains.

It was the same conviction that made members to raise money and purchased a large expanse of land at Kelebe as Muslim burial ground.
Crimewatch gathered that those who are in need of the final resting place for their loved ones, or people who died under tragic circumstances, especially, accident, drowning, among others, find solace in the burial ground.
The cemetery was considered secured until recently, when members of the Foundation started noticing signs of activities by some unscrupulous and uninvited individuals.

The Foundation’s Chairman ,Alhaji Ismail Kolade and the Secretary, Mallam Jimoh Lateef, said they were disturbed by the development, adding that it was the reason for increased surveillance at the cemetery in recent times. “We noticed that some people were disturbing the graveyard recently. We reported our findings to the police and intensified surveillance with local security and vigilance group. We also went spiritual. All these yielded positive result,” the Secretary disclosed.

The two suspects were arrested in the morning hours, by members of a vigilance group, few metres away from the graveyard. It was gathered that the men had been accosted some months ago over the same illegal act, but they claimed to be bricklayers, working in one of the plots of land in the area.

“They were accosted while washing their legs and hands in the stream close to the graveyard. We demanded to know the contents of the black polythene bag carried by one of them. Initially, they refused to open the bag. We insisted and when they discovered that they have been exposed, they attempted to escape. They were overpowered and beaten mercilessly. A human head was found in the bag,” a source disclosed.

The suspects were later handed over to the police for further investigation. The suspects’ confession led to the arrest of the third accused, Wasiu Oladimeji, 40, a resident of Ede. He was said to be receiver of the human parts from the duo of Babatunde and Adebayo. The three are now explaining their involvement in the case at an Osogbo Magistrate court, presided over by Magistrate Olusola Aluko.

The Police Prosecutor, Elisha Olusegun told the court that the trio committed offences that are punishable under sections 516, 242(1) (b), 329(a) (1), By 249(i) (b) of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Law of Osun State 2003.
Meanwhile, the three accused persons pleaded not guilty to the four- count charge while their counsel, Mr. Remi Ayoade, pleaded with the court to grant them bail.

The prosecutor, however, objected to bail application , arguing that it was not their first time of being in possession of human parts. The Magistrate, however, granted them bail in sum of N200,000, with two sureties and adjourned the case till December 8, 2011.
